Kitchissime – Claude VIALLAT
28 January 2022 - 30 May 2022

With the kind collaboration of the Templon and Ceysson Bénétière galleries
After his formidable retrospective held in 2014 at the Musée Fabre, Claude Viallat returns to Montpellier to take over the exhibition rooms of the GGl Foundation and even go beyond their confines.
A key figure in contemporary art, his name has quickly come to the fore as his story and that of Supports/Surfaces, of which he was a founding member, have left a strong mark on the South of France.
Here he exhibits mainly recent works, objects made of rope with a vernacular rusticity, but also and above all, fabrics painted with the repeated motif, a true signature that has made him so famous.
A duplication of which one does not tire, as artist plays so deftly on the diversity of the explored materials, and appropriates the raw support for a sound and rhythmic colorism transcending the simplicity of the motive.
Claude VIALLAT paints on whatever comes to hand. Fabrics sent to him or provided by friends. Fabrics of which one makes clothing or furnishing fabrics, curtains, which echo the domestic and decorative vocation of the Hôtel Richer de Belleval.
