“Disobedient” – Nazanin Pouyandeh

31 May 2024 - 9 November 2024

After Olympe Racana-Weiler and Marlène Mocquet, the contemporary artist of Iranian origin, Nazanin Pouyandeh, concludes the female trio of the GGL foundation with a unique exhibition titled “Désobéissantes” (“Disobedient”).

With her cultural heritage and original imagination, Nazanin Pouyandeh asserts herself as a singular and influential voice on the French art scene. By exploring the primal instincts of humanity, her paintings reveal a largely feminine humanity that confronts the mysteries of the world and frees itself from the constraints of rules.

Inspired by her personal history and her struggle for women’s freedom, her work highlights the challenges she has overcome and her aspirations for a more just and equal world, where the freedom of creation and expression triumph. The result is an erudite work, where a jubilant profusion intertwines religious elements and those drawn from pagan rituals, mythological figures, and art history.

This abundance is precisely staged, serving a figurative painting style described as “realistic” but leaning towards dreams, enigmas, and journeys, influenced by the multiple cultural references she gathers during her travels, from Benin to India.

Each canvas reveals a unique theatrical universe where women defy social norms and expectations, a true pictorial narration between the artist’s present and the past of the historical paintings she draws inspiration from. Nazanin Pouyandeh chooses to disobey, far from the stereotypes that one might want to attach to her art. Through her exhibition titled “Désobéissantes,” the artist depicts scenes that give free rein to our imagination, showcasing heroines of undeniable strength, masters of their destiny. These women are assertive, free, courageous, and curious, who enjoy being observed and remain detached from all judgment.

Nazanin Pouyandeh’s transgressive painting resonates with the struggle of Iranian women who fight daily, with grace and firmness, against religious dictatorship and the enslavement of their bodies.
